The review below is inapplicable to the current Gus's BBQ. Guss's now shares only the prior establishment's name and location--there are new owners, menu, bar, interior, etc. Pretty good BBQ joint now.

Arguably the quintessential South Pasadena locals' watering hole, Gus's BBQ does not have good barbeque. Heavily laden with a thick, ketchupy sauce, ribs and chicken easily lose their own inherent flavor. Sorry, folks, but it's not even good enough for a quick BBQ fix.

But if you're looking for a place to grab a quick meal in a '50s style booth, or to hit the bar for a drink or two and take your best shot at the pool table, Gus's may be just the place for you. Somewhat comparable to Shakers and Carrows in food selection and style, it is perhaps the most edible of the trio. While that may not be saying much, in a town bereft of a really decent coffee shop, this is all that is readily available in South Pasadena for the time being.
